"The death toll from a Boko Haram attack on a Nigerian army post on the border with Niger has risen to 48, military sources said on Monday. Scores of Boko Haram fighters in trucks stormed the base on Thursday in Zari village in northern Borno state and briefly seized it after a fierce battle. Boko Haram, which has been waging a deadly insurgency in Nigeria since 2009, has intensified attacks on military targets in recent months."

"The U.S. is supporting its ally Ukraine in a war against Russian-backed militants. The rebels have seized swathes of territory in eastern Ukraine since 2014, in a conflict that's killed 10,000 people by some counts. Soldiers from the New York Army National Guard directed the training exercise in the far-west of Ukraine. (...) The U.S. is still ramping up its support for Ukraine; more than 200 anti-tank missiles were delivered this month. 'They learn from us the newest experience of the hybrid war against Russia,' Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko told CBS News. 'And we learn from them their tactics and strategy, which makes my army much more efficient.'"

"Virginia man Mohamad Jamal Khweis sentenced to 20 years in prison for joining ISIS"

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/mohamad-jamal-khweis-gets-prison-sentence-joining-isis/

"Mohamad Jamal Khweis from Alexandria, Virginia, was convicted by a federal jury in June. The Justice Department said Khweis left the U.S. in 2015 and eventually crossed into Syria through Turkey late that year. Khweis spent 2.5 months as a member of ISIS in northern Syria. In 2016, he surrendered to Kurdish forces in northern Iraq and was eventually turned over to U.S. authorities, the department said."

"Flow of foreign ISIS recruits much slower now, U.S. says"

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/less-foreign-isis-recruits/

"Recently, Major Gen. Peter Gersten, the Pentagon's director of operations and intelligence for the campaign against ISIS, said that a year ago the U.S. estimated there were 1,500 foreign fighters per month coming into Iraq and Syria. He said that number is now down to 200 per month. Last week, FBI Director James Comey said that the number of people attempting to leave the U.S. to join ISIS has been down for nine months, and that it appeared to be a general downward trend. Comey said there are a few reasons - in addition to the group's mounting battlefield losses - that this is likely: the aura and fad that came with the group has faded; prison sentences for supporters and members are piling up; and people are realizing how hellish it is to live in ISIS territory."

"28 Pages"

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/60-minutes-911-classified-report-steve-kroft/

"Graham and others believe the Saudi role has been soft-pedaled to protect a delicate relationship with a complicated kingdom where the rulers, royalty, riches and religion are all deeply intertwined in its institutions. (...) [Tim Roemer, a former Democratic congressman and U.S. ambassador to India,] and others who have actually read the 28 pages, describe them as a working draft similar to a grand jury or police report that includes provocative evidence -- some verified, and some not. They lay out the possibility of official Saudi assistance for two of the hijackers who settled in Southern California. That information from the 28-pages was turned over to the 9/11 Commission for further investigation. Some of the questions raised were answered in the commission's final report. Others were not."

"Amnesty: Boko Haram may have killed 2,000 in 'deadliest massacre'"

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/amnesty-boko-haram-may-have-killed-2000-in-deadliest-massacre/

"District head Baba Abba Hassan said most victims are children, women and elderly people who could not run fast enough when insurgents drove into Baga, firing rocket-propelled grenades and assault rifles on town residents. 'The human carnage perpetrated by Boko Haram terrorists in Baga was enormous,' Muhammad Abba Gava, a spokesman for poorly armed civilians in a defense group that fights Boko Haram, told The Associated Press. He said the civilian fighters gave up on trying to count all the bodies. 'No one could attend to the corpses and even the seriously injured ones who may have died by now,' Gava said. An Amnesty International statement said there are reports the town was razed and as many as 2,000 people killed."

"The war on leaks"

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/war-on-leaks-national-security-press-freedom/

"Risen was the first to break the story about the NSA's secret wiretapping program that monitored Americans' phone calls without a court warrant. He's been subpoenaed to divulge his confidential sources in a separate federal criminal trial. He appealed the subpoena all the way up to the Supreme Court, but the court turned down his petition. Now, if he doesn't name names, he could go to jail."
