From January 23 to 25, 160 young people between 18 and 25 years from all over the world met up in Bad Honnef/Bonn for the International Youth Future Forum in the run-up to the UNESCO-World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development. Among the hosts were the World Future Council (WFC), the German Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb), the Catholic Social Institute Bad Honnef (KSI) and the Oecumenic Initiative One World (ÖIEW). The event took place in cooperation with the German Catholic Landjugendbewegung and Renovabis.
In the context of global problems as climatic change, the growing loss of biodiversity and the steadily increasing North/South gap in the division of wealth, the forum's slogan was "Vision, Values and Action”. 'Action' stands for the concrete and immediate need to make an active change towards sustainability in politics and education. 'Values' represents the necessity to reconsider the character of today's dominant value system and the role that values and principals should play in education. 'Visions' implies the discussion of new ideas and approaches of how to improve possibilities among young committed people in contributing to forming our future.
As world wide education systems have not yet succeeded in creating a coherently informed and responsible civil society that has a profound awareness for the importance of sustainability and is prepared to grapple with global challenges, it was the International Youth Future Forum's aim to convey a sense of urgency and provide additional impulses for the Conference on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), taking place in Bonn from 31 March to 2 April 2009.
At the end of the forum, after three days of workshops, lectures, panels and fruitful discussion, the attendants issued a common statement. In the latter, five core priority areas for the second half of the UN-Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD), subject matter of the ESD conference, were proposed: Ethics of sustainability, economics and ecology, social and economic justice, peace and future conflict prevention as well as civic participation and democracy. Vom 23. bis 25. Januar 2009 trafen sich 160 junge Erwachsene im Alter von 18 bis 25 Jahren aus aller Welt in Bad Honnef/ Bonn zum Internationalen Jungen Zukunftsforum im Vorfeld der UNESCO-Weltkonferenz Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung. Zu den Gastgebern/innen zählten neben der bpb das Katholisch-Soziale Institut Bad Honnef (KSI), der World Future Council und die Ökumenische Initiative Eine Welt (ÖIEW). Die Veranstaltung fand außerdem in Kooperation mit der Katholischen Landjugendbewegung und Renovabis statt.
Im Kontext globaler Probleme wie dem Klimawandel, dem wachsenden Verlust der Biodiversität und dem sich stetig ausweitendenden weltweiten Nord/Süd-Gefälle in der Verteilung des Wohlstands, war der Slogan des Forums "Vision, Values and Action". 'Action' steht hierbei für die konkrete und unmittelbare Notwendigkeit, in Bildung und Politik aktiv einen Wandel im Sinne der Nachhaltigkeit herbeizuführen. 'Values' repräsentiert den Bedarf, das dominierende kontemporäre Wertesystem zu hinterfragen und die Rolle von Wertvorstellungen und Prinzipien in Bildung und Erziehung zu überdenken. 'Visions' steht indes für die Diskussion über neue Ideen und Ansätze für die Verbesserung der Einbringungsmöglichkeit junger, engagierter Menschen in die Gestaltung unserer Zukunft.
Da Erziehung und Bildungsmaßnahmen weltweit bislang keine weitgehend informierte und verantwortliche Zivilgesellschaft zu formen vermochten, die ein profundes Bewusstsein für Nachhaltigkeit hat und bereit für die Auseinandersetzung mit globalen Herausforderungen ist, war es das Ziel des Jungen Zukunftsforums, die Dringlichkeit dieser Anliegen zum Ausdruck zu bringen und zusätzliche Impulse in die von 31. März bis 2. April 2009 in Bonn anstehende Konferenz zur Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung (BNE) einzubringen.
Am Ende des Forums gaben die Teilnehmer/innen nach drei Tagen voller Workshops, Lesungen, Panels und ertragreichen Diskussionen eine gemeinsame Erklärung ab. In dieser wurden fünf Schwerpunktbereiche für die zweite Hälfte der UN-Dekade Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung, welche im Fokus der BNE-Konferenz steht, vorgeschlagen: Nachhaltigkeitsethos, Wirtschaft und Ökologie, soziale und ökonomische Gerechtigkeit, Frieden und zukünftige Konfliktbewältigung sowie bürgerliche Partizipation und Demokratie.
