Youth Democracy Award

  • Youth Democracy Award (PDF-Version: 119 KB)

The International Democracy Award Bonn is awarded for the second time this year. A person, who has excelled in democratizing and supporting human rights, is going to be pre-priced. The goal of this award is to build a bridge between the successful experiences in Germany and the international developments in democratizing. On the basis of this award, the Federal Agency for Civic Education is giving away the Youth Democracy Award and especially wants to award the engagement of young people in Europe. The Youth Democracy Award will be given to a Project, which advocates Democracy or Democracy in Europe in an outstanding way. It is an appraisal of activities meant for young people or conducted by young people. A jury, which consists of young people, is going to choose the laureate at the end of april. Prospectively, the awards assembly is going to take place in march.

The Jury consists of young people in the age between 16 and 26 years, who are politically active and engaged in different branches of study. One part of those are Young EU Professionals and teamGLOBAL members (those are networks of young people, who convey their knowledge of globalization and Europe), the other part are young people who are engaged in other kinds of projects.

    Those criteria are essential:

    must-have criteria:
    • A project is an activity, a sequence of activities, a social Plan or similar things (Youth Center, Workshop, action group, etc.) The duration of the project may vary between one day, several months or years. Actions of the project have to be concordant with the principles of democracy.
    • Following countries may apply: EU-members, Albania, Andorra, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Island, Kazakhstan, Croatia, Liechtenstein, Macedonia, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, Norway, Russia, San Marino, Switzerland, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine, Vatican.
    • The project must be either organized by people from those countries, have a major group of participants in those countries, or has to be orientated towards at least one of those countries. The project should be either organized and carried out by young people who are between 14 and 27 years old, or it should have those as its target group.
    • Both, ongoing and planned projects may apply, but also completely finished projects, which are not older than 2 years.
    • The project should contribute to Democracy in Europe effectively and in a sustainable way. It should be non-party and non-confessional, and have no destructive goals, e.g. demand for racisms/ anti-Semitism/ sexisms/ segregation. It should support and encourage participation of young people and their capacity to act.
    • The project should be non-commercial.
    other (possible) criteria:
    • The project-promoter can be smaller youth groups as well as big Organizations. If possible, the projects should be creative and innovative.
    • The project can have an emphasis on a topic, e.g. Generation solidarity, Media, Participation, Discrimination, Environment, Integration, Education, etc.
    • Especially smaller project are asked to apply. Projects by young people will be (relatively) favored; all kinds of project-groups will be factored in the evaluation process.
    selection process
    • The project-promoter will be awarded if they are still social active
    • The jury will be looking for projects and will invite those to apply, but the project may also apply directly. The selection will be conducted by a Youth Jury consisting of 15 young people. Projects, in which a jury member is actively involved won’t be evaluated by him.
    • The application form should be filled out in English or German.
