Introduction "Mapping Memories of Post 1989-Europe"

The opening session sketched out a number of questions, tasks and theses the conference "Mapping Memories of Post-1989 Europe" would deal with. In their conversation, Heidemarie Uhl, Austrian Academy of Sciences, and Thomas Krüger, President of the Federal Agency for Civic Education, encouraged a European discourse on the historical narratives of societies.

The Conference "Contested Memories of the Difficult Past - Eastern Europe and Its History of the 20th Century" addresses questions related to victimisation and responsibility, how art and culture are dealing with competing historical narratives, and the influence of the diaspora on practices of remembrance in post-socialist countries.
