Mapping Memories

The programme “Mapping Memories” of the German Federal Agency for Civic Education traces post-communist cultures of memory and their historicisation in the current interpretation and reception of history in Europe. What are the interrelations and impacts of different historical narratives on European societies? How to deal with the institutionalised policy of “forgetting” and “master narratives”? What methods and tools are available to build bridges between different societal groups and generations? What opportunities are offered by other disciplines such as art as objects and methods of historical-political education?

Apart from an overview of the predominant historical narratives, country and region-specific work and concepts, and current projects on cultures of remembrance in the post-Soviet region, the programme seeks to interrogate their function, especially for younger generations. Using a variety of methods such as summer schools or conferences, the programme also facilitates networking amongst political educators throughout Europe.

Mapping Memories
