The European Year of Citizenship Education promotes discourse on the values and fundamentals of citizenship education in Europe, thereby opening an active forum for professionals and multipliers to discuss and debate the future of democratic participation here. The current crisis in the European Union has raised serious issues, including whether it is even possible to come to a common consensus in creating a model for European citizenship and, if that hurdle is cleared, how to achieve it.
Together with Saarland´s State Agency for Civic Education and the European Commission Representation in Bonn, the German Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb) is organising a workshop on "Models for a European Citizenship Education", to be headed up by education professionals and experts. The workshop, which is taking place within the framework of the bpb's NECE – Networking European Citizenship Education conference, will seek to address the following questions:
What defines a "good European citizen"? What subjects and values distinguish a European model of citizenship from others? What meaning and influence do models have on practices in the field of citizenship education in Europe?
The goal of the workshop is threefold: to evaluate both national and European models to determine what they have in common and what they do not, to compare national models using best-practice examples, and to develop criteria for creating a common model of European citizenship education.
The workshop will be held in English.
