The purpose of the workshop was to develop the principles for Citizenship Education (CE) for the projects executed by the members of the focus group from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine. Other aims of the meeting were to get an overview of the approaches and methods in CE, to exercise some of these methods and to develop the EENCE (Eastern European Network for Citizenship Education).

Workshop "Citizenship Education in Eastern Europe"
23-27 November 2015, Berlin, Germany

The first workshop, entitled "Citizenship Education in Eastern Europe," took place in November 2015 in Berlin, Germany. Twenty-six participants from seven countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine) discussed the issues and challenges faced in the field of citizenship education—especially within the context of Eastern Europe—and exchanged ideas and experiences on this topic. They also presented the projects, organizations and programs in which they are currently involved.

In smaller working groups, the members focused on current issues and the specific aspects of civic education in their respective countries in order to develop potential solutions and recommendations for the future.

Furthermore, the participants were invited to learn more about the situation of citizenship education in Germany. They visited several organizations in Berlin that are practically engaged in this topic. As a result of five fruitful days, the group decided to continue their work in 2016 with the aim of organizing a new NECE focus group. The meeting is planned to be held in one of the Eastern Europe countries in April/May or the summer of 2016.
