Donald Trumps Entscheidung, die US-Truppen aus Nordsyrien abzuziehen und so die türkische Offensive gegen die dort aktiven Kurden-Milizen zu ermöglichen, wird Ed Kilgore zufolge auch von den evangelikalen Verbündeten des US-Präsidenten als "Verrat" an den Kurden angeprangert. "No one should have been surprised by the fury that arose in congressional Republican circles over the president’s green light to his fellow authoritarian Recep Erdogan for a Turkish invasion of Syria. Most of them, after all, have never bought into Trump’s particular Jacksonian mix of militaristic bluster and non-interventionism, reflected in his alternating desires to get U.S. troops out of Syria or deploy them to kill everything that moves. (...) if old-school neoconservative hawkishness explains part of the bad reaction Trump got for his invitation to Erdogan, there’s a separate reason that leaders representing another important slice of the MAGA coalition. Conservative evangelicals have rebelled — some even more angrily than Graham — including the ancient Christian Right warhorse Pat Robertson (...). Why all the angst from this particular corner of MAGA-land? Well, as Trump should have well known, conservative evangelicals are very concerned about the rapidly shrinking Christian minority in Syria and throughout the Middle East, and view the Kurds as their protectors and the Turks as their executioners. And indeed, the region of Syrian that Turkey is invading is one in which Erdogan’s Kurdish enemies and Christians co-exist in relative harmony."

"In Private, Tucker Carlson Is Actually Giving Trump Decent Iran Advice: Report"

Matt Stieb berichtet, dass US-Präsident Trump in seinen Überlegungen zum Iran auf privater Ebene offenbar auch von Fox-News-Moderator Tucker Carlson beraten werde. Dies sei zu begrüßen, da Carlson im Vergleich zu Sicherheitsberater Bolton tatsächlich als "Stimme der Vernunft" angesehen werden könne. "According to a report from the Daily Beast, the Fox News host has been lobbying Trump in private not to take a hostile approach, questioning if a war with Iran would be 'in anyone’s interest.' On air, too, Carlson has been pitching his audience of one. In May, he took a swipe at Bolton, calling a conflict with Iran 'Christmas, Thanksgiving, [and] his birthday wrapped into one.' And on Monday, Carlson compared Pompeo’s 'misplaced certainty' in blaming the oil-tanker attack on Iran to the bad intelligence that the Bush administration flaunted leading up to the second Iraq War."

Der Historiker Jared Diamond erläutert in diesem Interview zum Erscheinen seines neuen Buches "Upheaval. How Nations Cope with Crisis and Change", warum er einen baldigen Kollaps der heutigen Weltordnung nicht für ausgeschlossen hält. "Today, the risk that we’re facing is not of societies collapsing one by one, but because of globalization, the risk we are facing is of the collapse of the whole world. (...) I would estimate the chances are about 49 percent that the world as we know it will collapse by about 2050. (...) At the rate we’re going now, resources that are essential for complex societies are being managed unsustainably. Fisheries around the world, most fisheries are being managed unsustainably, and they’re getting depleted. Farms around the world, most farms are being managed unsustainably. Soil, topsoil around the world. Fresh water around the world is being managed unsustainably. With all these things, at the rate we’re going now, we can carry on with our present unsustainable use for a few decades, and by around 2050 we won’t be able to continue it any longer. Which means that by 2050 either we’ve figured out a sustainable course, or it’ll be too late."
