Some general questions

Abstract

My personal aim – as a person and the filmmaker was to make the movies which expresses my personal experience in the universal enough way to communicate to different audiences: Polish, European, American. During last 15 years I´ve seen two first changing in the quiet spectacular way. It certainly reflected not only economical situation, but deeper changes inside of those societies.

More we can see of political and institutional will to build up the Europe as the entity, to create by legal and political acts the European identity, less the general public care about this subject. The gap between the actions of the governments and European institutions and people interest – different than monetary or economical - in the spiritual and social construction of authentic European tissue becomes bigger from one year to another. The enlargement doesn´t seam to change this tendency – the contrary.

The fall of the Soviet regime, the defeat of communism gave the blow to the faith on any general ideas and ideologies. The leftist thinking practically disappeared. By "leftist" I mean the consideration of common good, interest in another citizens situation, social and political solidarity, generosity, the ambitions to construct the better future for next generations. This decline of social and political ideas and programs went together with the crisis of the religious dimension in European societies. The churches lost the authority and their position diminished. The media and opinion makers don´t deal with the transcended and metaphysical dimension of human life. Probably never in modern History the purely materialistic approach of values was bigger. The crisis of the solidarity causes shrinking of interest in others. --- We can see this phenomenon on the level of the family, community, nation and between different countries. One is interested only in his personal profits. Cult of risk "zero" The larger events mostly doesn´t shake peoples curiosity, except if can have the direct impact on their everyday lives.

This general tendency has big influence on the state of contemporary cinema, its function, perception and economical and artistic reality. The European films practically ceased to be seen in European countries. Expect of some entertaining or internationally promoted by special events (announced big box office or the publicity of few top festivals) products, European films are not traveling. The Eastern European films are seen in Western European countries much less then during the worse days of Iron curtain. The exchange of ideas, emotions, knowledge, life experience by film in Europe on the wider, popular level become practically nonexistent. It means that one of the most important tools of communication between different societies has disappeared. And I still believe that film shows deeper truth about the world then do the TV news. The film can wake up the imagination, empathy, builds through the different emotions the bridge toward other cultures, different forms of life and forms of art, helps the difficult process of the identification with different experiences. That we have to find the way to rebuild its importance.
