Challenges: Morocco

There is no doubt that Moroccan educational system instituted a series of development plans to promote civic values through formal education, yet in spite of these advances, citizenship education already face a wide array of existing challenges, for instance[1]
  • The Mentality of Moroccan society, still rather traditional and the traditional family structure remains very faithfully attached to the archaic patriarchal scheme, which ranks higher than other groups in society.
  • Citizenship education is limited to slogans and good will.
  • The difficulty of involving all the stakeholders.
  • The lack of a comprehensive vision to develop a civic values project.
  • The effect of insufficient language competences
It has been clear to us through our experiences as a civil society organization that the challenges of citizenship education can be further understood by looking at educational practices within the classroom, we can identify significant challenges to the citizenship education:
  • Insufficient priority, time and tools given to integrating citizenship education with school activities.
  • Lack of creativity and activities designed to promote citizenship education within the school and local communities.
  • Lack of continuing interest and support from school’s administration.
