The Preparatory workshop, which set the stage for the NECE conference 2019, was held in Glasgow at the Technology & Innovation Centre, Glasgow (UK), from 5 to 6 June 2019.

The purpose of this workshop was to test and collect ideas about the complex relationship between citizenship and inequality and concepts and tools of citizenship educators in a variety of contexts. The conclusions will be channelled in the NECE Conference 2019 from 24 to 27 October in Glasgow.

During the workshop, basic issues and narratives of citizenship, poverty and deprivation and their impact on citizenship education in schools and in civil society were discussed. One central question was how citizenship education as a profession can learn how to better deal with the effects that inequality and poverty have on the lives of young people and citizens living on the margins.

Experts and practitioners from Glasgow, the UK and other parts of Europe were invited to enter into dialogue to explore these issues and challenges. On the first day, a keynote by Robert Rogerson from the Institute for Future Cities (University of Strathclyde) gave a first insight on different perspectives which opened up a debate about the basic dimensions of inequality in the city of Glasgow. The round table was joined by Jane Cerexhe, Head Teacher at Oakgrove Primary School in Glasgow, Ross Deuchar, University of the West of Scotland, and Henry Maitles, University of the West of Scotland, and was afterwards followed by a plenary discussion. In the second part of the day a presentation of a forthcoming book by Jan Germen Janmaat and Bryony Hoskins was held: "Institute of Education, Department of Education, Practice and Society, University College London". The presentation was followed by a comment from Sarah de Lange from the University of Amsterdam (NECE Advisory Board Member) and a plenary discussion.

On the second workshop day, the participants gathered in different working groups for developing and discussing ideas for the conference programme.
