Fascism, idealised as a fetishized and unbroken totality, often appears in today’s political landscape as incoherent, paradoxical, yet extremely successful. Widely known as a political ideology that originated in European modernity, fascism’s political, economic, and affective continuities have violent impacts internationally, especially among regions of the Global South.
As part of the festival Politik im Freien Theater and associated with the exhibition and research project “Global Fascisms,” HKW (Haus der Kulturen der Welt Berlin), in cooperation with the Department of Political Education and Plural Democracy in Leipzig, presents two lectures and a subsequent panel conversation on the expanding tendency of fascist politics on a global scale, while exploring historical genealogies from which contemporary fascisms flourish. Bringing together localised perspectives, interregional dynamics, and a global network of domination and exploitation into its examination of global fascisms, the event seeks to gain deeper insight into the globalness and interconnectedness manifested in today’s rise of right-wing politics. It asks what underlying crises, structural weaknesses, and misconceptions need to be adequately addressed to prevent further fascifications of our social and everyday life.
