Interactive Keynote Speech: Results of the Memo Study on the Culture of Remembrance in Germany
Michael Papendick, (Bielefeld University, Co-Author of the study)
Panel discussion: Who tells the Story and who listens?
Hanna Veiler, German activist and publicist. Until March 2025 President of the Jewish Student Union of Germany
Zeynep Karaosman, Peace-activist
Daniel Haberlah, Author of the book „Als ‚Asoziale‘ nach Ravensbrück – Das kurze Leben der Irmgard Plättner (As an ‘asocial’ to Ravensbrück – The short life of Irmgard Plättner)
Eighty years after the end of World War II, Germany is often seen as a global example of self-reflective remembrance. But does that image really hold up? Or does it hide the blind spots that still shape how history is remembered – and who gets to remember? This evening’s panel invites you to dig deeper: Whose stories are heard? Whose voices are still missing? And how can different historical experiences actually speak to each other? Before the conversation starts, Michael Papendick will share insights from the MEMO youth study – how do young people in Germany today perceive memory culture?
