Faced with between 55 to 70 million dead, immense human suffering and destruction of incomparable
dimensions, the period after World War II was animated by the desire to build structures for more peace
and cooperation. The founding of the UN and the (Universal) Declaration of Human Rights were based on
the urge to create an organisation to secure peace and to protect people from state excesses in the future.
In this episode of histoVOICES, Aisha talks about what the United Nations means to her, what her hopes
are for the future of Afghanistan's youth, and what changes she would like to see.
What does our connection to World War II look like today? histoVOICES is an artistic approach to grasp
our thoughts, fears and fragile memories of what happened 75 years ago. Different national and social
backgrounds and their impact on narratives are not masked, but allowed to exist simultaneously.
#histoVOICES is part of histoCON an event series organized by the Federal Agency for Civic
Education/Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung (bpb), which is designed to be a platform to share and and discuss global perspectives on history and their relation to our present and future. The aim is to discuss
narratives about historical events, their continuing effects, and lessons that can be drawn from history.
The explicit intention behind #histoVOICES is not only to commemorate the particular historical event but to consider the
implications for the present and future, too. Furthermore, young people from all
over the world shoul be encouraged to get to know different perspectives of history, to question existing narratives, and to reflect
on questions of war and peace in today's world.
