#histoPOD: Commemorating the Holocaust in Japan Erinnerung an den Holocaust in Japan

von: Annika Brockschmidt

Memory of the Second World War in Japan is often influenced by 1945, when the nuclear bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. How is the Holocaust communicated in Japan, and how does the country deal with its past? In this episode of the histoPOD, we speak to Fumiko Ishioka, the director of the Holocaust Education Resource Center in Tokyo.

Inhalt

After the end of the Second World War, the full extent of the systematic murder of six million European Jews became known to the global public. In our histoPOD podcast we speak to international experts to learn how the Holocaust is remembered in different countries. How has commemoration of the Holocaust developed over time? Who was involved in looking back and analysing the past? And what does critical engagement with the Holocaust mean for the countries’ own history?

Fumiko Ishioka is the director of the Tokyo Holocaust Education Resource Center (Kokoro), a non-profit educational organization, since 1998. It aims at helping learners become responsible and active global citizens who value human dignity for all and reject discrimination and prejudice.
