Seit ihrer Gründung in der ersten Jahreshälfte 2013 ist die Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) Gegenstand einer lebhaften Debatte um ihren rechtspopulistischen Charakter. Obwohl sie in den ersten 12 Monaten ihres Bestehens vor allem auf euroskeptische Positionen setzte, sieht sich die Partei spätestens seit den Landtagswahlen im Herbst 2014 immer wieder dem Vorwurf ausgesetzt, in der Gesellschafts- und der Integrationspolitik rechte Positionen zu vertreten. Ihr gegen die politischen Eliten gerichteter Habitus nährt den Verdacht, dass der Populismus in der Positionierung und medialen Selbstdarstellung der Partei eine bedeutende Rolle spielt. Dabei agiert die AfD in der Bundesrepublik auf ungünstigem Terrain: Die föderale staatliche Struktur, die strukturelle Organisationsschwäche der politischen Rechten und der mediale Diskurs erschweren die Etablierung neuer Parteien rechts von CDU und CSU. Bislang sieht es allerdings danach aus, als ob die AfD sich als neue Partei im konservativen bis rechten politischen Spektrum etablieren könne. Ihr Charakter mit Blick auf den Rechtspopulismus, auch im Vergleich mit anderen Parteien dieser Familie in Westeuropa, ist bislang jedoch weiterhin ungeklärt. Es ist daher notwendig, die Diskussion um die Einordnung der AfD konzeptionell und empirisch zu untermauern. Hierzu wird die AfD anhand ihrer Positionierung, mit Blick auf ihre Lage im politischen Wettbewerb sowie anhand ihrer Sympathisanten untersucht. Auf dieser empirischen Grundlage ist es möglich, eine Einordnung der AfD hinsichtlich ihres rechtspopulistischen Charakters vorzunehmen.

Since its founding in the first half of 2013, the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) has been provoking an ongoing debate about its right-wing populist character. While it focused on Euro-skeptical topics during the first 12 months of its existence, since the regional elections in autumn 2014, the party faces accusations of promoting right-wing positions in immigration and social policy. Its anti-establishment attitude seems to confirm the suspicion that populism plays a crucial role in the party’s positioning and medial profile. However, the party operates on disadvantageous ground: the federal structure of the state, the organizational weakness of the political right and the media discourse aggravate the rise and success of parties in the right spectrum beyond CDU and CSU. Up to now, it appears as if the AfD would take roots in the conservative sphere of the German party system. Its character, however, especially considering right-wing populism in comparison to other exponents of this party family throughout Europe, remains to be solved. It is thus necessary to underpin the discussion about the categorization of the AfD both conceptually and empirically. Hence, the party shall be analyzed on the basis of its positions, its location in the competitive space and its sympathizers. This empirical fundament shall help to classify the AfD regarding its right-wing populist character.
