NECE Preparatory Workshop, 16 - 17 May, 2018, Marseille (France)

This workshop aimed to identify the forms and conditions of political-cultural education in France, with particular emphasis on the south of France, whilst bringing together stakeholders from the French political, cultural, educational, scientific and media sectors, in addition to relevant civil-society organisations from the Marseille region. The findings and experiences of the workshop will be incorporated into the further design of the NECE Conference 2018 in September.

The purpose of this workshop was to discuss the current political and social environment in France, and especially in the Marseille region, with regard to the general conditions of cultural and citizenship education. The findings and experiences will be incorporated into the further design of the relevant programme items at the NECE Conference 2018 in September.

Players from the fields of politics, administration, culture, education, science and the media in France as well as relevant civil society organisations from the Marseille region were invited to enter into a dialogue on the forms and conditions of political-cultural education in France, with particular attention to the south of France and fostered by a keynote by Alexis Artaud de La Ferrière, University of London, on the topic of “Enseigner les valeurs européennes – mais comment?”.

On the second workshop day we invited providers and activists from the Marseille region to present selected projects and initiatives in a Speed lab: How do the local and regional civil society organisations see the many challenges in this city and how do they are taking them on? What do they like to show to and discuss with players and activists from other parts of Europe?

In addition, participants were given the opportunity for contacts and dialogue outside the workshop grounds. Parts of the preparatory workshop were consecutively interpreted by Animateurs linguistiques from French into English and vice versa.
